Concept Items

Playtesting has been going well. Figuring out which mechanics work, which don't and coming up with new weapons and items on the fly. Here are a bunch of sketch designs for some weapons, if I could get some feedback about which work and which don't, that'd be really helpful. I know which ones are my favourite, but I'd like some feedback about which of the different items look best.




In other news. I have a mua-hassive backlog of games to play and TV to watch, not only having a ton of work to get on with. It's all piling up!!

  1. Hmm, I like the stick grenade, could use more work though, more designs!
    Flash light I'd go with [C], minus the stick.
    [C] looks cool for the adrenaline, though it does look like a pen, so I'd go for [B].
    I kinda like A for the stun rod, got a club like look, needs some zappy looking bits though.
    [A] for medi kits, would look cool with recessed handles in the case.
    Have to say I'm not keen on the prototype guns, [C] if I had to. They need to look unfinished, it's a prototype, it all the essential bits and no flourishes, hell, it might not even be working properly.

  2. Oh I should mention, the stick on Flashlight C is actually a strap for it to go around one's forearm. I was trying to think unconventional future designs because if this is set in the future then surely their tools would've evolved? Thanks for the feedback though!

  3. I'm not sure what style you're going for exactly, but the ones I like are ones that are the best balance between being unique and recognisable.

    Grenade: A. Being a newfag, it's the one I'd most be able to recognise a grenade at a glance. The others could have an ambiguous function. The designs are good though, and a pro would probably work out what they were regardless of my mental retardation.

    Torch: B, I think. I like them all, very recognisable as torches, but B has that winning silhouette without looking too stock.

    Adrenaline: If a needle comes out of it, then C. If not, B. Again, good silhouettes. A good colour scheme could really help to tell the player that it's a medical item though.

    Stun Rod: C. A could do with some zap lines to show where it comes out. I'm guessing the end? While I like how it looks, you want to keep a taser/stun gun/whatever pressed to a target, and something that top-heavy could easily shift about. A highly concentrated tip is a nice idea though!

    Medkit: I think you could combine all 3 of the key elements into one item: compact, pop-out handle, sliding trays. I like when things can grow, especially for devices that have to be technical and precise such as healing items.

    Protoype Rifle: A. It looks most recognisably like a rifle at a glance. You could strip it down or add extra bits on it for different stages of development, but that key shape will let the player know that it's a rifle regardless of its condition.

  4. Dicks, I should have read your comment. The strap sounds like a really good idea for that torch. Maybe make it look a little more like a sheath for the arm to give it some extra strength?

  5. Thank you for the wall of text! The Prototype rifle is supposed to look like a big unwieldy weapon as it's still in development, the scientists are working on getting it more stripped down and efficient. Also the Stun Rod is kinda like a sword, you just hit people with the bits that have bolts coming out of then they collapse and start smelling of pork.

  7. TBH, I don't like any of the grenades =/ But then, I'm fussy like that.

    Otherwise, it goes;

    B - Classic shape, easily recognisable

    B - Just looks funkiest (and kinda like a lightsabre)

    C - I don't know why. Maybe 'cus it reminds me of a chainsaw, and I does like killin' zombies.

    A - Again, very classic shape. Just plain appealing and familiar to me.

    C - Reminds me of the Smart Guns from Aliens.

    I have only just realised how much of a geek I really am about item design...
